Windows Mobile 6.5 Coming Oct. 6; Xperia X2 and HTC Touch2 Announced

Whew, what a lot of news coming out. The biggest news is that Windows Mobile 6.5 will launch on Oct. 6, with phones coming from AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. And the devices running the new software will now be called Windows phones. This week we’ll highlight this news, plus note new devices from Sony Ericsson and HTC.

Reviews of the new Touch Pro2 from T-Mobile are starting to appear. T-Mobile is the first U.S. carrier to begin offering this phone, with the others expected to roll theirs out soon. This week I’ll also point you to details leaked about the forthcoming Windows Mobile 7.

Touch Pro2 Devices Imminent from Four Carriers; Verizon’s Omnia

As PocketNow.com points out, it’s rare for one device to be released from the four major carriers in the U.S. But that’s happening with the HTC Touch Pro2, which is imminent. This week I’ll point you to specs on the devices, a video of the version coming from Verizon, as well as update you on the Omnia from Verizon.

Google Maps, Mobile Marketplace, New Verizon Device

We’ll begin this week with news about a substantial update to Google Maps and about the forthcoming Windows Marketplace for Mobile, but the most timely news is a new device from Verizon — and the strong prospect that Verizon or Sprint could come out with the Toshiba TG01, the hot new device with a speedy processor and a 4.1-inch screen.

This past week brought some welcome news about Microsoft’s forthcoming software store for Mobile Devices. This week we’ll also note two great freeware applications, a media player and an RSS reader. And I'll point you to an application that lets you use your device as a web cam.

Office Mobile 2010; Recent Freeware

Microsoft posted a video yesterday that begins to introduce the features of the forthcoming Office Mobile 2010 software. In addition to pointing you to that, I want to highlight some recent freeware, including Skype 3.0 gold, Searchme, Auto Call Recorder, and Screen Capture.

Mobile Directories, Microsoft’s Bing, T-Mobile Dash 3G

Despite the ability of browsers like Opera to give you mobile versions of web pages designed for the desktop, I still prefer web sites that have been designed specifically for mobile devices. This week I mention the Cantoni mobile directory and point you to my list of mobile directories. Also, I note that Bing has a mobile version and that T-Mobile’s iteration of the HTC Snap, called the T-Mobile Dash 3G, is imminent.

Free Streaming TVApp, Celio Redfly, Samsung Omnia II

Amazing how we’ve come to expect so much more from our phones now, including streaming video. TheChanner is a free app that gives you access to over 300 streaming TV channels. This week we’ll also note a freebie that gives you an iPhone-like unlock screen, a review of the Celio Redfly (which turns your phone into a laptop), and an early review of the Omnia II.

Pharos Traveler, Sprint’s HTC Snap, New Devices from Acer

A steady stream of devices continues to appear — it’s hard to keep up. I try to focus on those that are available from major carriers and those that seem to be game-changers. This week we have some of both, including a new phone from Pharos that’s the first to work on T-Mobile’s 3G network (plus, it also works with AT&T’s 3G network), and new phones from Acer that have a remarkable and unique interface. Plus, we note the arrival of the HTC Snap from Sprint.

Opera Mobile 9.7 is now available as a free Beta, and this might be a good time for you to try this browser, if you haven’t already. Also this week I’ll briefly point you to more reviews of the Touch Pro2, as well as note news and reviews of new devices, including the impressive Acer F1.

This week I want to highlight some new mobile services: a mobile hotel reservation system from KeyToss, a free app for searching for movies and theaters, the free Google Mobile App, and a new voice search offering from TellMe slated for Windows Mobile 6.5. All of this points to a future in which we'll have voice access to powerful online services and tools.
