Features I would add (Apr 2008)

The Feature I'd Like to Add to Windows Mobile

The ability to play more video file types without jumping through hoops; for example: Flash (.flv, .swf) and QuickTime (.mov), and not just via a web browser when visiting a site, but also ones on a storage card.

April Expert Round-Up: The feature/s I would add to Windows Mobile!!

April showers are bringing flash floods down here in lovely Ft Walton Beach, FL (where I happen to be working), and the monthly topic is proving to be at least as timely as the much needed rain--what with a new version of WM looming over iPhone like a thundercloud...maybe I exaggerate a bit.

6.1 and other features I want in Windows Mobile

This topic of the month was quite timely given Microsoft's announcement about Windows Mobile 6.1. (I am at the CTIA wireless conference in Las Vegas, so a little late in posting this month's topic. BTW Sprint and AT&T have committed to upgrade all the 6.0 devices to 6.1 and I believe almost all their 5.0 phones.) The new consumer features for 6.1 (specifically getting started app and rotating Today Panel) may not over-wow readers of this blog. However, the signal of the direction is critical for the ongoing success of Windows Mobile -- usability is of fundamental importance.

The Features I Would Like to See Added to Windows Mobile

This month our focus is on Windows Mobile features that we would like to see added to the platform. While it is doubtful that any operating system is perfect, Windows Mobile has been taking it on the chin as of late. One of the main reasons is the recent hype surrounding the iPhone, and its simple, finger-touch enabled, OS. Many Windows Mobile fans are wondering why some of the iPhone’s features have never been included in any of the WM updates. I have never been secretive about my feelings for Windows Mobile. Again, it may not be perfect, but I do love what it can do for me. I feel there are too many limitations with the iPhone as it pertains to business usage, but perhaps Windows Mobile could take a few pages from the Apple playbook. With that said, I wanted to focus on improvements on the Windows Mobile user interface, and upgrades that might improve its standing with the general public, and not just business users.

The features I would add to Windows Mobile..

This month's blog theme is "The features I would add to Windows Mobile". For me this is simple... nothing! Ok, you are probably thinking this is an April Fool's joke but it isn't. I'm not saying the Windows Mobile is perfect - believe me after almost 15 years of playing with these devices I'm well aware of the shortcomings/problems. But if we are talking about features, I don't think Microsoft needs to add anything to the OS. Where I want to see features is third party software products!

Features I would like to see added to Windows Mobile

Out of the box a Window Mobile device certainly comes with a myriad of features for instant productivity and entertainment. However, as you learn more about the potential of the device, you begin to wish it could do even more and long for more applications to make it happen. Of course, there are thousands of third parties programs that will do just about everything on my wish list and more. Perhaps the advantage of installing third party applications is that they add more features than just the main one on my wish list. Probably, if Microsoft included all these features, it would put a lot of other companies out of business, which I would not want to see. It would no doubt also make the device that much more expensive. On the other hand, installing all the third party software to make my wish list come true could cost a tidy little bundle too. The Wish List

Wishes For Windows Mobile

So the Expert topic for this month is what feature(s) we would like to add to Windows Mobile, and I must say, there are quite a lot in my list but let's narrow it down to what can be done: Finger Friendly I mean, come on Microsoft, why should I be taking out my stylus to navigate my phone when those iPhone users just need to use their fingers? Multi-Touch This will be really useful in making web browsers that much better (think manual zoom ala iPhone).

Well April Fool's day is upon us, and so is the monthly expert topic. This month, we have a nice surprise for our readers...and no foolin!

Windows Mobile Wish List

Features I would like to see added to Windows Mobile - It's Time for a Change! Let me preface the following blog entry by saying I am not an embedded systems hardware designer. I occasionally write programs for the Windows Mobile platform, though mostly using high-level languages and frameworks. With that disclaimer out of the way, I can say with all honesty that I'm so glad the iPhone has been such a success for Apple. Microsoft badly needed serious competition to reset the playing field.
